YEESSS!!!! It’s official, Taiki Waititi has signed on to direct Thor 4 for Marvel Studios. Praise the Gods!
After Thor’s first two outings being a tad middle of the road, New Zealand filmmaker Taiki Waititi stepped up to deliver an absolute knock out with Thor 3 aka Thor: Ragnarok – ditching the Lord Of The Rings-esque fantasy vibe and going full throttle zany space adventure. However, with Marvel’s other original heroes receiving a trilogy each (Iron Man and Captain America), it seemed that Thor would be finishing up just as things were getting interesting…
But now, with fans clamouring for more, Marvel have decided to continue the God of Thunder’s space travels for a fourth outing. Thor was last seen helping his mighty pals defeat Thanos once and for all in Avengers: Endgame, ending with him heading space-wards with the Guardians Of The Galaxy, hinting at a future team up (Asguardians Of The Galaxy, anyone?). Following Endgame and Spiderman: Far From Home, the MCU has closed the book on Phase 3, and Phase 4 is a closely guarded secret. Hopefully we’ll get some announcements soon as San Diego Comic Con is fast approaching – and it’s no doubt that this is why Waititi has been signed on at this time.
The news from THR is that Marvel have contracted Waititi for Thor 4, with some additional responsibilities – he’ll be writing and directing this time (Thor: Ragnarok was written by Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle and Christopher L. Yost). We can also no doubt expect more of his customary ad-lib approach, letting the actors throw in their own touches to create some of the movies’ best moments (see ‘He’s a friend from work!’ in Thor: Ragnarok).
We now need to wait and see what the exact timing is for Thor 4, both in terms of cinema release and setting within the MCU – the biggest question must surely be if it will be before or after Guardians Of The Galaxy 3, as Thor was last seen taking off into space with them. Hopefully, we’ll get some news this weekend at Comic Con!!
