Producer James Cameron makes a surprise reveal during Comic Con…
It has been revealed during Terminator: Dark Fate‘s panel at San Diego’s Comic Con 2019 that the actor Edward Furlong will be returning to the franchise as John Connor. Furlong first appeared as Connor in 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day, as the floppy-haired teenager that would go on to become the saviour of humanity, making friends with Terminator-turned-protector Arnold Schwarzenegger along the way.
The Terminator franchise continued from there without James Cameron, and has taken a few twists and turns (not to mention highs and lows) along the way. However, Cameron has now returned to produce this new instalment, which he sees as a direct sequel to Terminator and Terminator: Judgment Day (in other words, forget all the shitty ones in between).
So far it was believed Furlong would be appearing in the latest movie only through flashbacks to the original, but now Cameron promises he will return in person in Director Tim Miller’s continuation of his story.
Information on what Furlong will be doing in the film itself has been scarce – how much will he feature, will he have become the saviour he was predicted to become? Furlong has had his own ups and downs in the years since playing young Connor that may have led to doubts that he would return. However, the chance to return to the much-loved franchise may have been too tempting to say no.
Either way, the idea of Furlong returning as an older John Connor, alongside his mother Sarah Connor AND Arnold’s Terminator is an all-too-exciting prospect. John Connor’s story was expanded in the other Terminator entries to, shall we say, not overly loved points (he became a Terminator himself in Terminator: Genisys) so it will be interesting to see this version. Hopefully we’ll find out soon just what he’ll be doing in the movie.
